If your case is pending with the USCIS, you can check your case status online. To use the case status of your application or petition with the USCIS, you just need to enter your application/petition’s receipt number. The receipt number consists combination of 13-characters assigned by USCIS. It can be found on the upper left corner of the Form I-797 Receipt Notice and it usually starts with three letters such as WAC, EAC, LIN, etc.

If your immigrant or nonimmigrant visa application is pending at any US Embassy and Consulate worldwide, you can check the status of your case online. To use the visa application status, you just need to enter your CEAC Barcode and the interview location for nonimmigrant visa (NIV) cases and the case number for immigrant visa (IV) cases.

The USCIS FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request can also be checked online. To use the FOIA case status with the USCIS, you need to enter the FOIA receipt number given when you file the request. The processing timeframe for the FOIA request also varies depending on the request. If the request qualifies for “Simple Track” processing then the processing times can be as short as 30 days. However, if the request qualifies for Fast Track or Third Track processing it could take a longer processing time.
